“SENIORS SERVING SENIORS”

Information and Advisory Services:

A service where trained senior volunteers answer a wide variety of questions of concern to seniors and refer callers to the proper agency or service.

 

Directory of Resources:

An annual bilingual publication of seniors programs and services which is used by individual seniors, organizations, family members and professional care providers in Ottawa.

 

Monthly General Meetings:

Gatherings hosted by member clubs and open to all seniors, these meetings provide a forum for everyone to express their opinions and concerns, exchange news and information, meet other seniors, and listen to guest speakers on a wide  variety of topics.

 

The Senior Sentinel:

The Council’s own newsletter is published nine times per year – September through May. It provides information on current events and activities of special interest to seniors. Of the 2000 copies printed and distributed per issue, The Sentinel is provided free of charge to 450 individual  members, 60 seniors clubs and to subscribers from agencies and businesses.

 

The 55-Alive Mature Driving Refresher Course:

In cooperation with the Canada Safety Council, the Senior Citizens Council sponsors this popular driver safety program designed specifically for seniors. This classroom refresher course for drivers 55 years of age and over is  delivered by specially trained senior instructors. The course is offered in the Spring and Fall and there is a $25 registration fee.

 

Defensive Driving Course:

This is a proven program designed to produce life-long safe driving habits and to help drivers avoid all types of traffic collisions despite the actions of others or the driving conditions.

 

Community Income Tax Clinics:

The Council organizes and supervises these clinics with service provided by professional accountants volunteering their time and expertise in order to assist low income seniors and disabled persons in preparing their income tax returns.

 

Senior Citizens Festival:

In celebration of Seniors’ Month in Ontario, each June, the Council encourages participation in many special events and festivities by publishing the June Calendar of Events.

 

Snow Go Program:

Helps seniors and people with disabilities find reliable snow removal services. The program is coordinated by the senior Citizens Council in co-operation with eleven community support agencies. Residents make payments directly to the screened contractors or individuals.

 

Snow Go Assist Program:

Supports approved, low-income seniors and people with disabilities who may be reimbursed up to 50 per cent of show removal costs to a seasonal maximum of $250
